Matthew 5:38-42

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you."

What I think Jesus is trying to do in this passage of scripture, is to explain grace, to explain love, to explain mercy, and to explain compassion. Jesus is saying if someone’s asking you for something give them more, everything you have, everything you have to offer. Don’t withhold. Be a cheerful giver. If someone’s in need of something give him that plus more. Jesus is basically saying walk in love. Walk in Grace. Walk in forgiveness. These are learned behaviors. They will take time to cultivate in our daily lives. But A deeper relationship with Jesus, and a continual seeking of his face will assist in learning these behaviors. Jesus showed us how to turn the other cheek when he hung on the cross and brought the man next to him with him. Lord help us to walk out your word!
